France and Switzerland

Paris, Geneva and Zurich: A Suite by the Louvre and Two Swiss Rivers

A week across France and Switzerland: three nights in a suite with a kitchen by the Louvre, the train to one night on the Rhone, then three on the river in Zurich's Old Town, with breakfast at every stop.

Where to stay, and why

La Clef Louvre Paris

Paris, near the Louvre · 3 nights

A suite with its own kitchen, a short walk from the Louvre in the 1st arrondissement. La Clef is a serviced residence rather than a standard hotel, so three nights in one city come with apartment-style space. Booking through me adds daily continental breakfast for up to two, a welcome glass of wine per guest, a welcome gift in the room, and an upgrade when one is free.

Mandarin Oriental, Geneva

Geneva, on the Rhone · 1 night

A room on the Rhone, a short walk from the main station, so the one night in Geneva starts when the train gets in. Booking through me adds full breakfast for two, a dining credit, a welcome amenity, and an upgrade, early check-in or late check-out when free. Guests can also have Geneva's free transport card, which covers buses, trams, the shuttle boats and trains inside the canton.

Storchen Zurich

Zurich old town, on the river · 3 nights

On the Limmat in Zurich's Old Town, at Weinplatz, with the river outside. Three nights here make it the settled end of the week, after two moves. Booking through me adds daily breakfast, a hotel credit, priority check-in, a welcome amenity with a note from the general manager, and an upgrade when one is free.

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Paris

Into a suite with its own kitchen, a few minutes' walk from the Louvre, with a welcome gift in the room and a welcome glass of wine on the rate.

  2. Days 2 and 3

    Paris

Left open. Breakfast comes with the rate and the Louvre is a few minutes away, so a day can start at the museum or anywhere else in the city. With three nights in one place, nobody packs a bag until the train.

  3. Day 4

    Paris to Geneva

The train to Geneva, station to station. In Geneva the hotel is a short walk from the train, and the transport card covers the shuttle boats, so the afternoon can go to the lake.

  4. Day 5

    Geneva to Zurich

Breakfast on the Rhone, then on to Zurich. The train runs from the middle of one city to the middle of the other, and it is how I'd make this leg. Check in at the Storchen, on the river in the Old Town.

  5. Days 6 and 7

    Zurich

Left open. Breakfast comes with the rate and the Old Town starts at the door, so two days go to its lanes and the river with no train to catch. The hotel credit is there to spend at the hotel.

  6. Day 8

    Zurich

Check out and fly home from Zurich.

What made it work

  • A week with two moves in it only works when each move is easy. Paris to Geneva went by train, station to station, and every hotel put the part of town worth walking right outside the door.
  • Each hotel sized to its stop, rather than one kind of room three times over: a suite with a kitchen for three nights in Paris, one night a short walk from the station in Geneva, and the river in Zurich for the quiet end.
  • Breakfast at all three, with a credit or a welcome amenity on top, on partner rates that come with booking through me. Upgrades, early check-in and late check-out depend on what is free that day, so they were never promised.
  • Before each check-in I wrote to the hotel to reconfirm the booking and the perks, and each one answered in writing. In Geneva the free transport card was set up before arrival, so the one afternoon there could go to the lake instead of a ticket machine.

Worth knowing before you go

Ask for Geneva’s transport card ahead. At the Mandarin Oriental, the hotel registers its guests for Geneva Tourism’s free card on request. Ask before you arrive rather than at the front desk.

Zurich’s bridge works. The city has begun rebuilding the Rathausbrücke, beside the Storchen, for flood protection, and the hotel warns of some noise and traffic changes. Until the work is done, ask for a room away from the bridge side when you book.
