Safari and wildlifeAfrica

The Serengeti in calving season

The southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro area when the wildebeest give birth, and the predators follow.

Best: January and February

I've been, in January

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

Calving runs from January to February in the southern Serengeti and around Ngorongoro, and predator activity rises with it.

What I take care of

I went in January myself, after climbing Kilimanjaro, and I can pair the two the same way. The camps that put you closest to the herds go well ahead.

Hiking and trekkingSouthwest

Havasupai's waterfalls

Turquoise falls in a side canyon of the Grand Canyon, on a stay of three nights below the rim.

Best: March to May and September to November

I've hiked it twice

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

Spring and fall usually miss the summer heat, when the trail can close, and the worst of the monsoon floods. Early to mid-October is the steadiest of the fall weeks.

What I take care of

The whole year's permits sell out in a single morning, months ahead, and that sale decides the trip. I've been through it twice for my own trips, and I plan the rest around the dates that come back.

Hiking and trekkingEurope

The Dolomites' Alta Via 1, hut to hut

Days on foot through the Dolomites, sleeping in mountain rifugi, with a drive through the passes first if you like.

Best: July to September · Also good: June

I've walked it

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

The rifugi open in mid-June, and July to September is the heart of it. The southern huts close in late September, before the northern ones.

What I take care of

Each hut keeps its own season and its own way of booking, and the southern end runs out of huts first. I plan the stages around which huts are open and hold the beds in order.

Hiking and trekkingSouthwest

Zion's Angels Landing

The chain-assisted fin of rock above Zion Canyon: five miles out and back, with nearly 1,500 feet of climbing.

Best: March to May and September to November

I've walked it, before and after the permit

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

Spring and fall are the comfortable seasons. Summer is dangerously hot on an exposed climb with no water, and in winter ice on the chains can turn you around.

What I take care of

The chains go by a permit lottery, drawn before each season, and it closes earlier than most people expect. I apply for the right draw, and Scout Lookout makes a real finish if you'd rather skip the chains.

Safari and wildlifeAfrica

South Africa: safari in the dry winter, the Cape in its summer

Game drives in the bush and days in Cape Town and the Winelands, with the order of the trip set by the season.

Best: May to September and December to March · Also good: October and November

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

From May to September the bush is dry, game gathers at water and the grass is short. The Cape is warm and dry from December to March. September suits both, with whales off the coast.

What I take care of

The two halves peak in different seasons, so the month decides which comes first and how long each gets. I build that around the right lodge, and plan for a malaria-free reserve if you'd rather.

Hiking and trekkingCalifornia

The High Sierra: the John Muir Trail, Whitney and Yosemite's High Sierra Camps

Granite passes and high lakes: on the John Muir Trail, up Mount Whitney, or from camp to camp in Yosemite with beds and meals waiting.

Best: July to September

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

Snow and high creeks hold the passes into July, and the Tioga Road opens when the plows finish. So the season is short: July to September.

What I take care of

Whitney's permits and the High Sierra Camps' beds go by lottery months ahead, and the John Muir Trail's start is capped. I enter the draws and build the trip around what comes back.

Festivals and holidaysEurope

Christmas markets: Vienna, Prague and the Rhine

Prague's Old Town Square, Vienna's twenty-plus markets, Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt, or a river cruise that stops at the markets along the way.

Best: November and December

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

The markets run from late November to just before Christmas, and many of Vienna's open in early November.

What I take care of

Market weeks bring hotel minimum stays, and the smaller markets keep their own dates. I plan the order of the cities, the trains between them and the hotels.

Hiking and trekkingClimbs and expeditionsMountain West

Longs Peak, from a Boulder Field camp

A classic mountaineering route to 14,259 feet, climbed after a night in the Boulder Field instead of a pre-dawn start from the trailhead.

Best: July to September

I've summited it, from a Boulder Field camp

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

The route is usually clear of snow and ice from mid-July to mid-September. Even then the afternoon storms mean an early summit.

What I take care of

Sleeping high gives you a night to acclimatize and a spare morning if the weather is wrong. The Boulder Field camp needs a wilderness permit, released once for the whole summer, and I hold it with the climb.

Safari and wildlifeAlaska

Alaska's summer: Denali, Kenai Fjords and the Root Glacier

Denali's backcountry, a kayak among the tidewater glaciers of Kenai Fjords, and a walk onto the Root Glacier at Kennecott.

Best: June to August · Also good: September

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

The season is short. Denali's park buses run from late May to mid-September, and the Kenai Fjords cabins close at Labor Day.

What I take care of

The coastal cabins are few and go early, and Denali's backcountry permits are given out only a day ahead. I put the cabins, the water taxi and the rest of the route in order.

Climbs and expeditionsSouth America

Aconcagua's season

A guided expedition on Aconcagua, at 6,961 m the highest mountain outside Asia, over about three weeks.

Best: November to February

I've summited it

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

The climbing season is the southern summer, November to February.

What I take care of

I climbed it myself, and I can match you to an expedition and the training for it.

Hiking and trekkingSouthwest

Utah's canyons: Paria, Coyote Gulch and the Needles

Slot canyons, sandstone narrows and the rock spires of Canyonlands' Needles, walked in the mild weeks of spring and fall.

Best: April, May and October · Also good: March, September and November

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

Summer brings the heat, then the monsoon from mid-July, which is flash-flood season in every slot. Spring and fall are the windows.

What I take care of

Paria takes a few hikers a day, and the Needles' camps release a season at a time and go quickly. I watch for the nights you want, and plan around the dirt roads and the weather.

Hiking and trekkingSouthwest

Winter in the desert: Big Bend and the Superstitions

Cool-weather backpacking in the desert Southwest, from Big Bend's 30-mile mountain loop to Arizona's Superstition Wilderness.

Best: November to March · Also good: April

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

Big Bend is a late-fall to early-spring park, and the Park Service says plainly not to attempt its long loop from early May to early October. The Superstitions are at their best in winter and spring.

What I take care of

These routes run on water you carry or cache ahead, and Big Bend's sites are handed out at the park. I plan the water, the route and a fallback for each night.

Rivers and paddlingSouthwest

The Grand Canyon by raft

Three days to two and a half weeks on the Colorado River, camping on its beaches below the canyon walls.

Best: April to October

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

Commercial trips launch from April to October. Motor trips run until mid-September, and after that the river is oars only.

What I take care of

Trips run short or long, motor or oar, and the good departures fill a season ahead. I match you to the trip that fits your time and how you like to travel.

Hiking and trekkingMountain West

The Tetons and Glacier's chalets

The Teton Crest Trail behind the peaks of Grand Teton, and in Glacier two hike-in chalets that make a hut trip of it.

Best: July to September

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

The high passes clear in July. Glacier's chalets open in early July, and the reliable weeks run into September.

What I take care of

Teton campsites open on a single day in winter, and the chalets book early in the year. I hold the dates for you and plan the days in between.

Rivers and paddlingMountain West

Idaho's Middle Fork of the Salmon

About a hundred miles of river through the Idaho wilderness, up to eight days by raft.

Best: June to August

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

The permit season runs from late May into early September. Early summer brings higher water; later in the summer the river drops.

What I take care of

Seven launches a day are allowed, and about four of them go to guided trips. I find the departure and the outfitter that fit your dates.

Hiking and trekkingSouthwest

The Narrows of Zion

Walking up the Virgin River between canyon walls, in the water for much of the day.

Best: July to September · Also good: June and October

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

It opens when the spring snowmelt drops, usually in late June, and July into early October is the reliable stretch. July and August have the warmest water; late September and October are calmer and cooler.

What I take care of

The river decides each morning whether it is open, so I build a flex day into the trip. The full top-down route needs a permit released a season ahead, and I time it with the rest of your Zion days.

Snow and winterHiking and trekkingMountain West

Colorado's huts: hut to hut in summer, ski touring in winter

A chain of backcountry huts in the Colorado mountains: skis or snowshoes in winter, a hut-to-hut walk in summer.

Best: July to September and December to April

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

The huts open for winter the day before Thanksgiving and close at the end of April, then open again from July to September.

What I take care of

Winter nights go through a members' lottery first, and summer opens on one day in the fall. I time the request and add a guide if you'd like one.

Hiking and trekkingCalifornia

Joshua Tree and Death Valley

Two desert parks a few hours apart: a 36-mile trail across Joshua Tree, and winter canyons in Death Valley.

Best: November to April · Also good: October

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

Joshua Tree's season runs October to May, peaking from March to mid-April. Death Valley is a winter park, often over 100°F from May to September.

What I take care of

Water is carried or cached along the long trail, and both parks' backcountry permits open months out. I plan the route, the water and the permits, and check the desert roads before you go.

Festivals and holidaysEurope

Oktoberfest in Munich

Munich's beer festival on the Theresienwiese, from late September into the first days of October.

Best: September and October

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

The festival opens in the second half of September and ends in early October.

What I take care of

Festival weeks bring hotel minimum stays and higher rates. I find the hotel and the nights that work, and can pair Munich with the Dolomites.

Snow and winterMountain West

Yellowstone in winter, by snowcoach

Old Faithful and the geyser basins under snow, reached by snowcoach with a guide.

Best: January and February · Also good: March and December

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

Oversnow travel runs from mid-December to mid-March, when the interior is open only by snowcoach or a guided snowmobile.

What I take care of

Old Faithful Snow Lodge keeps a short winter season. I put the lodge and the snowcoach together, so you arrive with the geysers on the doorstep.

FamilyMountain West

Dude ranches: summer in the West, fall color after

A week on a ranch, riding by day, with the full program in summer and quieter weeks of fall color after.

Best: June to August · Also good: September and October

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

June to August is the full program, busiest around the Fourth of July. September and October are quieter, with cooler air and changing leaves on the trail rides.

What I take care of

Ranches run from all-inclusive and polished to rustic and relaxed. I match the ranch to how much riding, and how much comfort, your group wants.

Rivers and paddlingCalifornia

Sea kayaking the Channel Islands

Sea caves and island camping in Channel Islands National Park, a boat ride from the mainland.

Best: August to October

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

The Park Service says the calmest winds and seas often come from August through October.

What I take care of

The island boat sets the trip, so I hold it before the campsite. The campground at Prisoners Harbor makes it possible to walk or paddle between two harbors on Santa Cruz Island.

Hiking and trekkingPacific Northwest

Washington's wild Olympic coast

Two to four days on the Olympic Peninsula's wilderness coast, rounding headlands at low tide.

Best: April to October

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

April to October is the season. Winter storms make the coast seriously hazardous.

What I take care of

Some headlands pass only at low tide, and part of the coast is capped all year. I plan each day around the tide table and hold the permits when they open.

Climbs and expeditionsPacific Northwest

Mount Rainier, guided

A guided glacier climb of Mount Rainier with one of the three guide services the park authorizes.

Best: May to September

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

The peak climbing season runs from May to mid-September.

What I take care of

I match you to a guide service and a departure, and plan the nights either side and the training before.

Safari and wildlifeAfrica

Victoria Falls in full flow

The falls with the Zambezi running high, often paired with a safari in Chobe or the Okavango Delta.

Best: November to March

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

The falls are in full flow in the southern summer, and lowest in the dry winter, when the Okavango is at its flood peak instead.

What I take care of

Livingstone sits about 70 km from the Chobe front, so the falls make a natural start to a Botswana safari. I plan the order around the water.

Snow and winterAlaska

Fairbanks for the northern lights

Winter in Alaska's interior, for the aurora on clear, dark nights.

Best: November to March · Also good: September

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

The Park Service puts the aurora's best season at November to March, when the nights are longest. The season itself begins in late August.

What I take care of

Clear skies are never certain, so I plan at least three nights and keep the days flexible around the forecast.

Safari and wildlifeSouth America

The Galápagos in the dry season

Island hopping by small ship or from a lodge, with cool, rich water bringing the marine life in.

Best: June to November

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

From June to November cooler air and nutrient-rich currents draw a huge concentration of marine life, with penguins, waved albatross and frigatebirds. The seas can be rougher.

What I take care of

Ships and island lodges sell by route, and the routes visit different islands. I match the route to the wildlife you most want to see.

Climbs and expeditionsAlaska

Denali, for climbers

A guided expedition on Denali's West Buttress, about three weeks on the mountain.

Best: May and June · Also good: April and July

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

Teams climb and summit from late April to early July. June is milder up high than May, and the Park Service's own advice is to plan a trip of at least three weeks.

What I take care of

I match you to a guide service and a departure, and plan the training and the courses that come before it.

Hiking and trekkingNortheast

New England in the fall: the Long Trail, the White Mountain huts and Acadia

A section of Vermont's Long Trail, the White Mountain huts, and Acadia's coast in October color.

Best: September and October · Also good: July and August

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

The Green Mountain Club calls late summer and early fall ideal on the Long Trail. Acadia's color usually peaks in the first three weeks of October, and five of the huts stay open into mid-October.

What I take care of

The huts fill early for the foliage weeks. I hold the nights, then fit the trail and the coast around them.

Rivers and paddlingMid-Atlantic

Gauley Season and the New River Gorge

Six fall weekends of dam releases turn the Upper Gauley into Class III to V+ whitewater, with more than 1,400 climbing routes next door at the New River Gorge.

Best: September and October

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

The releases start the first weekend after Labor Day and run for six weekends. The New River Gorge's fall climbing season runs from mid-September to late October.

What I take care of

The Upper Gauley is for paddlers 16 and over, and the release weekends are set each year. I line up the river, the climbing and a place to stay for the weekend you pick.

Rivers and paddlingSoutheast

The Everglades by canoe, and Cumberland Island

The Everglades' 99-mile Wilderness Waterway for experienced paddlers, or wilderness camps on Georgia's Cumberland Island.

Best: December to April

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

December to April. From June to October the Park Service calls the Everglades' mosquitoes intolerable, and it is hurricane season.

What I take care of

The Everglades' sites release a few months out, and Cumberland is reached by a ferry that runs fewer days in winter. I hold the sites and the boat together.

Festivals and holidaysSoutheast

Christmas in New Orleans

Carols in Jackson Square and hotel lobbies dressed for the season, from The Roosevelt's tunnel of lights to the French Quarter.

Best: December

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

December, when the lobbies are lit, the trees go up and the city celebrates the whole month.

What I take care of

New Orleans is home, and I know which lobby to stay in for the lights. I put you in the right hotel, with the partner perks that come with the stay.

FamilyUnited States

Disney in the quieter weeks

Walt Disney World or Disneyland outside the main school breaks, with shorter waits and an easier pace.

Best: January and September

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

January and September fall between the main school holidays, so the crowds are lighter at both resorts.

What I take care of

I plan the park days, the dining and the resort, and add the perks that come with a Disney resort stay.

FamilyUnited States

Fall college visits

A road trip of campus tours, timed for when students are there and the games are on.

Best: September to November

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

Fall is when students are on campus and sports are in full swing, so you see each school as it really is. Holiday breaks and parents' weekends are the weeks to miss.

What I take care of

Campus tour slots are limited and fill quickly. I string the schools together by drive time, hold the tours and book a hotel near each campus.

Rivers and paddlingMidwest

The North Woods by canoe: the Boundary Waters and Isle Royale

Lakes and portages in the Boundary Waters, or Isle Royale, an island park in Lake Superior reached by boat or seaplane.

Best: August and September

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

Late summer, once the bugs fade. On Isle Royale they are worst from late June to early July and gone by late August, and the boats stop running in September.

What I take care of

Boundary Waters permits are capped and open on one day in winter, and Isle Royale runs on its boat schedule. I plan the route around both.

Snow and winterMidwest

Dog sleds in the Boundary Waters

Running your own team of dogs across frozen lakes in northern Minnesota, from a lodge or a winter camp.

Best: January to March · Also good: December

Why then, and what I take care of
Why this time of year

Dog-sled trips run once the lakes freeze. January to March is the heart of it, and the holiday weeks in December fill first.

What I take care of

I match you to a trip that fits your group, a lodge with day runs or nights out on the ice, and plan the travel there.
